And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. Luke 16:8.

In this parable the rich landowner entrusted the management of his estate to his steward. Then later he brought charges against him for the abuse of his stewardship. He ordered him to give account. The steward knew that this would mean the loss of his position, so decided upon a scheme. He sent for his master's tenants who still owed goods and money. He reduced their indebtedness and had them settle for much less than what they owed. In this way, when dismissed from his position he would still have friends among the tenants, who would provide for him. Granted that the unjust steward had little to commend him in the way of honesty. But the master commended him for his ingenuity and diligence for his own future benefit.

The issue involves a contrast with the Christian entrusted by God with the management of His estate and eternal business in this world. Christ said that the children of this world, in their own line of work and business, and according to their own standards, act more wisely than the children of light. They are diligent, active, persevering, hard working. They set their whole heart upon getting economic security for themselves. They watch for every opportunity to make headway. One does not say, "I have an opportunity in a business deal to make a lot of money if I act now. My friends agree with me. But I will wait a year to see if the price comes down." He has no intention of letting the deal slip out of his hands, so he immediately engages in the transaction.

Do we as Christians manifest the same interest, thoroughness, and diligence as do the children of the world? Do we strive to obtain eternal riches with the same commitment? Do we serve our Lord with less zeal and His cause with less devotion, than the man of business, the man of pleasure, or the man of sports serves his cause?

Let us be determined to please God every bit as much as men are set to please themselves. When we are called to account, Christ will receive us into His everlasting kingdom.
